York rivers trail: walking together through water, climate and community

Aerial view of river in York with text above it reading "Each drop of water upstream shapes life downstream... Right here, in the heart of York."

This September, we invite you to take part in the soft launch of the York Rivers Trail as part of the York Environment Festival and York Walking Festival.

This September, we invite you to take part in the soft launch of the York Rivers Trail as part of the York Environment Festival and York Walking Festival.

The trail is a new way to experience the rivers that shape York. Looking to blend art, science and local voices, the trail will explore how York is responding to the climate crisis through creativity, nature-based solutions, and community action.

What to expect

The guided walk will follow a short stretch of the River Ouse, starting at North Street Gardens, home of the Viking Recorder, and finishing just beyond Scarborough Bridge. Along the way, we will pause to reflect on stories of flooding, resilience and connection. You will be invited to share your ideas and impressions, helping us shape how the trail is experienced in future by York residents and visitors from further afield.

Expect around an hour of:

  • conversation and reflection
  • insights into flood resilience and nature-based solutions
  • creative prompts to capture your perspective
  • a chance to connect with others while walking beside the Ouse

The route is flat and step-free, suitable for all abilities.

Why now

This walk continues the listening and co-design work that underpins the York Rivers Trail. Rather than showcasing a finished product, we are inviting you to help shape its future. Your reflections will directly inform how we bring the trail to life ahead of its full launch in June 2026.
