Ousewem announces new focus catchments following initial success
We are excited to announce the next phase of our natural flood management (NFM) delivery, centring on new focus catchments within North Yorkshire. Building on the success of our initial projects, our phase two of works will be delivered in:
- Appersett/Hawes
- Hunton
This progression is made possible through partnership working and the development of advanced tools and analysis across the SUNO catchment.
How focus catchments were identified
Our approach to identifying focus catchments involves the use of cutting-edge hydrological and hydraulic modelling and tools, along with economic assessments. These tools allow us to highlight areas with significant flood risk and a high potential for flood risk reduction via NFM and environmental enhancement. By utilising our NFM Calculator and developing NFM Max scenarios, we quantify both the flood and natural capital benefits of NFM projects. This meticulous process ensures we target areas where our efforts will have the most significant impact on improving flood resilience.
NFM intentions and impact
Working in partnership with farmers, landowners and communities, our NFM efforts in these new focus catchments aim to:
- Mitigate flood risks
- Enhance biodiversity
- Improve land health
By implementing nature-based solutions (NbS), we not only reduce flood risk but also contribute to maintaining a healthy ecosystem, ultimately benefiting both the environment and local communities.
Funding opportunities and how to get involved
Farmers and landowners
We invite farmers and landowners in these areas to join us in this collaborative effort. Delivery of NFM will be assessed on a site-by-site basis. Once assessed, and if eligible for NFM, we will design and implement NFM with the farmer and landowner and support in navigating the complex funding landscape. With Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust and Natural England as key members of our delivery team we offer local skills and advice to farmers and landowners to consider environmental initiatives and additional funding options.
