Strength in partnership: how collaboration drives natural flood management

A group checking the trees which have been planted.

Natural flood management (NFM) isn’t just about tools and techniques - it’s about people working together. Our latest video explores how partnerships are the foundation of successful NFM projects.

From farmers and landowners to environmental organisations and local authorities, collaboration is what turns strategy into action.

Why partnerships matter in NFM

Effective collaboration makes NFM more impactful in many ways including:

  • better planning – engaging those who know the land best ensures solutions work in practice, not just in theory
  • greater efficiency – pooling expertise and funding allows projects to cover more ground with fewer resources
  • stronger local engagement – partnerships build trust and long-term commitment, making interventions more likely to succeed

Engaging landowners and communities

Landowners and communities are at the heart of NFM. Their involvement is critical for ensuring that NFM strategies are both effective and sustainable. As Ousewem continues its work across the Swale, Ure, Nidd, and Ouse (SUNO) catchments, partnerships will remain at the heart of our approach. By working together, we can:

  • support farmers and landowners in delivering NFM solutions that protect Yorkshire communities
  • strengthen engagement with communities downstream, demonstrating the real-world benefits of NFM
  • ensure that policymakers and funding bodies recognise the value of NFM in building long-term flood resilience

Building on the Ousewem series

This video builds on our second instalment, NFM tools: modelling, theory and practice, which explored how hydrological and hydraulic models inform decision-making. Now, we shift focus to the partnerships that bring those plans to life - ensuring interventions work on the ground and deliver lasting impact.

By showcasing successful partnerships, this video highlights how collaboration can help secure the long-term support NFM needs - whether through government schemes, environmental initiatives, or future funding opportunities.
